Care for your Gems

<< Back

Caring for your precious gems is very important. It can prevent scratching, chips, fractures and any other damage that can be caused during wear, storage and also cleaning. Every gemstone is different, and has different properties which make them unique. You have probably heard that the Diamond is the hardest of all gemstones and in fact it is acutally the hardest known mineral found on the earth, but Diamonds can still chip and fracture if not cared for correctly.

Below is a chart that is a measurement of hardness of Gems, it is called the Mohs Scale. As you can see, no other gemstone comes close to being as hard as the Diamond, so here are a few recommendations when it comes to looking after your precious pieces...

We offer a cleaning and inspection service for all jewellery. We will check the setting of your gemstone jewellery and ensure they are all secure, then we will clean your pieces with the appropriate methods. For instance, you CANNOT put Pearls or even Emeralds in an ultrasonic machine, where as you can use this device for cleaning Diamonds, Sapphires and Rubies. Along with our Ultrasonic Cleaner, we also have an Ionic Cleaner, which is very gentle on ALL gemstones. Please visit us and we can advise you further.

If you are unable to drop your pieces in, or you want a bit of a spruce up in between inspections, there is a safe method for most gemstones, however if you are wanting to clean pearls, opals, amber, enamel or anything similar, just a wipe over with a damp cloth... that is all we recommend you use at home.

To clean other harder gemstones, use a solution of reasonably warm water (not boiling!), a mild dishwashing detergent and/or diluted ammonia. Soak for between 10 mins to half an hour and afterwards brush gently with a soft toothbrush, this should remove any stubborn dirt and bring back the sparkle to keep you going till your next visit.
